The new Mavic Air is a marvel of engineering and design.

Having recently passed that precious YouTube milestone of one million views, the video offers viewers a glimpse of the engineering and thought design behind DJI’s game-changing Mavic Air drone.

The folding design of the Mavic Air mimics that of its big brother, the Mavic Pro. As tall and wide as a smartphone when folded, it’s half the size of a Mavic Pro and is 41% lighter.
When folded, it also covers 32% less surface area space than a DJI Spark. It becomes an even more ultraportable device in its carry case and is comparable to everyday objects like eBooks, glasses cases, and over-ear headphones.
The Mavic Air is the most portable drone to house a 3-axis mechanical gimbal. To protect the 3-axis camera gimbal, DJI engineers had to create a recessed niche within the body of the aircraft.
Protected by the chassis, the newly designed gimbal system is suspended from a set of dampeners in a triangular formation, which dramatically reduces excess vibration for steadier shots.
To make a drone so powerful, intelligent and portable, DJI designers had to radically redesign the way they make drones. They first had to miniaturize all the tech inside and then polish and refine every curve to make the Mavic Air’s body incredibly aerodynamic.
Alongside all the miniaturizing, heat dissipation needed to be handled efficiently to prevent overheating. So they created a ventilation system that draws air in from behind the gimbal and through the heat sink, only to expel it through vents on the back.
If that wasn’t enough, they also increased signal coverage while minimizing space through omnidirectional antennas placed discreetly on the landing gear.
The Mavic Air allows for a 4 km range over enhanced, dual-band Wi-Fi signal, thanks to a new antenna design and software improvements.
The seven onboard cameras, part of an updated FlightAutonomy 2.0 System, make the Mavic Air DJI’s most intelligent Mavic yet.
This new technology enables a 3 directional environment sensing system where the forward, downward, and rear dual cameras sense the environment in 3D and in real-time.
Processing data from this many sensors allows the Mavic Air to read the environment with a greater attention to detail, providing better obstacle avoidance and more accurate real-time positioning.
Finally, APAS, or Advanced Pilot Assistance Systems is the result of several years of research on flight path calculation.
Similar to autopilot, when flying forward, APAS will plan a flight path to bypass obstacles both vertically and horizontally. All this is done autonomously while you’re simply piloting forward.
With the upgraded Flight Autonomy System and APAS, the Mavic Air gives you all the confidence you need to fly worry-free, even in complex environments, for example when hiking in a forest.
